Update III: Hello Illinois. (Following Alabama, Georgia, North Carolina and East Texas.)

This has gotten a lot of hits.
Look at what James Snipe hit with his car on county road 328 north of Swenson, Texas in Stonewall County. The lion was still alive [Editor's note: Daaawwwww!] but unable to move, so our neighbor called animal control and they came and put him down. A land owner had seen this one a week before dragging off a 320 lb. steer. Our neighbor is an amateur taxidermist and he's going to stuff him. This one weighed 260 lbs. while most mature male mountain lions weigh 80 to 150 lbs. We had no idea they still roamed around here!
Still don't know if this is for real. "Snipe" is a name I've seen before, but it makes me pause.
Update: Abilene Reporter-News is calling it a hoax.

I received this in an email today, and was looking up info on it when I found your site. The email I got is the same, except the location is given as "1 mile south of Silsbee, Texas in Hardin County". Maybe we'll find out if there's a real James Snipe in some state who actually hit a 260 lb. lion! :)

I got the same email today saying it happened in Silsbee, TX. Something just ain't right. If you notice behind the chair in the background, there is an elk shed. I don't know about you, but I've never seen an elk while deer hunting is southeast Texas.
I live in Hardin County and called the game warden this morning. He knew nothing of it, and said there is no way this is true. Around here, news like that would travel fast and he would definitely know. This is 100% fake, at least in southeast Texas.
I recieved this email today also..it said he hit it in Jackson county nc! lol
I received this today and it stated that it was killed in Amite County Mississippi.
I saw this going around at work....Its been reposted with different locations around the USA.

Check it out on Snopes.com. Portions of the story are verified to be true but it was killed in Arizona on Hwy 24. The guy in the picture is the DPS officer that had to put the cat down and he is also a taxidermist on the side.

Steve from Oxford, MS: I called the amite county, MS sheriff's office and while no one had seen it to verify, they thought it was true, and that is the story they are sticking with. I asked them about animal control (that finished it off) -there is no such department in amite county. So?????
Well, now the big cat has been hit in Foley, AL. Boy I hope he is getting paid for this...LOL
He's also been run down in Livingston, AL. This cat has more than nine lives (and deaths apparently)!
Add Summerdale Alabama to the list of reincarnation sites. I wish I could visit all the places he's been. LOL
I just received this same email, it said it happenend in Iuka Illinois.
Got this message the other day with Centralia, IL in the message body.... My supervisor took it seriously enough to send it to all of us....
I have hunted in Hardin all my likfe and never seen anything like that. We know everyone in Flat Cypress and around there so I will found out for sure. I see these eamils like this all the time and the location changes, size changes, etc etc.
I believe it may be a true story but not anywhere in my area..

DID YOU KNOW...... the very same lion was also hit in Nova Scotia, Canada, in the small community of Northfeild, north of Kempt.
Mr. Snipes and his cat certainly are well traveled! I just read about the one here in Nova Scotia where there have been sightings claimed for many years, but never any conclusive proof found.
THe Silsbee story is the correct my mother has the Silsbee Bee with the story about it
