Need book

Anybody got any decent books to read?

It needs to be fiction. I've been watching too many movies and reading too many blogs lately and I can feel the brain rot starting to set in.

Two things: I'm not in the mood for Harry Potter. I have nothing against Harry, but I'm not in the mood. And don't tell me "Da Vinci Code." If you tell me "Da Vinci Code," I'm going to spend the rest of my days trying to figure out how to send a kick-in-the-crotch via e-mail.

I'll wager that it's not fiction.

Hmm - what kind of fiction do you enjoy? I read A GAME OF THRONES a while back and thought it was really good. ALL THE PRETTY HORSES is a good modern western. THE AMAZING ADVENTURES OF KAVALIER AND CLAY was fun - about these guys that wrote comics back in the 40s & 50s. VIRTUAL LIGHT/IDORU/ALL TOMORROW'S PARTIES by William Gibson is some good sci-fi. CRYPTONOMICON by Neal Stephenson. That last one is a favorite; you should definitely check it out. What are the last few books you read and enjoyed?

I'll wager that you think it is.... Quite a little Catch-22 we have here isn't it?

Tom:
I tend to be a generalist on the fiction. Or maybe just a nerd. I was into westerns for a while, but haven't been in the mood lately. I think some serious science fiction might do the trick. Really then only thing I've been interested in for the past year is Tom Pratchett and the Disk World series. Good stuff, but I need a break from fantasy, even the highly satirical kind.

I have good odds that I won't be able to follow your explanation of how this is a catch-22.

(I typed a lot of shit here...then I thought, "yeah, probably not." So I just erased it and typed that instead.)

Yeah, probably not.

The Gibson books I mentioned are really good sci-fi. Neal Stephenson's Snow Crash is a blast, really inventive. I'm a big fan of Kim Stanley Robinson's Red Mars trilogy.

I need to start reading more; my brain is rotting from playing goddamned warcraft all the time. Starting the new job, I'll probably have to give that up mostly.

Yeah, I would've gotten into Warcraft right now but I think my wife would see it as a "last straw" kind of thing and I don't want to go there.

She also told me that she has the Kavalier and Klay book, so I'll be digging that out of box soon and reading it. Thanks for the suggestions.

Dude, you can't go wrong with "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas" - About a journalist and loads of drugs and debachery - things you and I and a whole bunch of our friends can relate to. I'll loan it to you. Don't see the Johnny Depp movie beforehand!
